The Poet X – Elizabeth Acevedo

The Poet X Cover

I listened to the audiobook for The Poet X because I know my attention span for poetry isn’t as great as it could be. I did not regret a single second of it. Acevedo is a stunning poet, and her narration of Xiomara’s story was heartbreaking and perfect. This book deals with a lot of hard stuff and needs some trigger warnings, but it is absolutely beautiful. I’ll definitely be buying anything Acevedo writes in the future.

Pride – Ibi Zoboi

I didn’t know this when I bought it, but Elizabeth Acevedo, author of The Poet X, narrates the audiobook. Yet again, she does a stunning job. However, the true star was Zoboi’s writing. This is a Pride and Prejudice retelling (or remix, as Zoboi dubbed it) set in a gentrifying Brooklyn neighborhood. Zoboi took everything great about Pride and Prejudice, turned it up to 10 and made it incredibly relevant to today’s society. I loved the way that she dealt with the Wickham plotline in a way that really worked for the modern day. This was my first book by Zoboi, and I’ll definitely be watching out for more of her work!

Team Phison – Chace Verity

Full Disclosure: The author and I are in a writer’s group together and I consider us friends. Even without that, I fell hard for this age gap gamer m/m romance when I read it.

I loved how snooty Phil was with everyone, and how sweet he was with Tyson. I don’t think you’ll be able to resist these two sweethearts.

I didn’t want to put it down the whole time I was reading it. Seriously, it’s one of my favorite romances and you should all read it.
