Fave Links Friday 1/3: Queer History, Vampires and Recessions, Beans and Deepfake Girlfriends

If you’ve found yourself wondering where all the good writing’s gone, I’ve decided to share some of my favorite links with you on a weekly basis! It might be short fiction, it might be news articles, it might be random blog posts from me and from others!

None of these links are sponsored. I really just liked them!

Don’t forget, you can check out previous weeks’ lists in the Fave Links Friday category!

I strongly encourage you to call your representatives and tell them exactly what you think about current events. You can use Common Cause to find out who your reps are and what they stand for if you aren’t sure where they stand. Show some particular love to your Jewish friends – the attacks on them have been even worse than usual over the last month.

Welcome to the new year, everyone! As usual, I have a list of very different links for you to pick from.

Excavating a Queer History of Colonial Williamsburg

One of my favorite childhood trips was to Colonial Williamsburg. I was thrilled to learn more about the actual history of the place.

Staking Capitalism: The Undead Will Rise as Our Economy Spirals Into Chaos

Y’all might not know this, but I’ve always loved vampire stories. I might even have one in the works. S.E. does a fantastic job looking at the connections between vampire stories and economic troubles. It’s fascinating.

COOL BEANS: How the humble legume — especially heirloom varieties — became the go-to ingredient for home cooks this year

I have to admit, I am not a fan of beans. They have a smell and texture that usually makes me gag, but I loved reading this piece. Maybe I’ll be willing to try some different ways of cooking them in the new year. That’s a hard maybe, though.

I (28M) created a deepfake girlfriend and now my parents think we’re getting married [FICTION]

This one is a fiction short story by Fonda Lee (author of the fabulous Jade City series) and I loved it. I’ve loved the format of the “Am I The Asshole” posts and Lee used all of it to her advantage in this story.

What stories have you loved recently? Tell me all about them!
