Character Interview: Bianca & Dahlia from Changing Loyalties

Hello, dear readers! Today I’d like to introduce you to Bianca and Dahlia, the protagonists of Nicole Field’s latest book, Changing Loyalties, which comes out tomorrow!

When Dahlia finds the body of her father, a werewolf, brutally murdered and left to die alone, she’s left with more questions and grief than answers. But who or what killed him remains unknown, and it soon becomes clear her father isn’t the killer’s only target.

Adding to the growing pile of mysteries in her life is the new job—for a company that seems to be run by the kind of people who have no qualms about murdering werewolves. Even more frustrating, Dahlia’s new boss, Bianca, is curt and rude—and far more intriguing than seems fair.

What were your impressions of one another when you first met?

Bianca: *laughs* I’m pretty sure I didn’t make a very good impression at all.

Dahlia: I dunno. Do you want the diplomatic answer, or the accurate one? No, I didn’t like Bianca at all when I first met her. It seemed as though she was incredibly brash. I mean, I didn’t think I was going to end up working with her at all after the interview, so things didn’t go incredibly well.

Bianca: To be fair, I hate interviewing people when I know we’re going to take them on, and I have a million and one other things I could be doing. It wasn’t anything personal!

Dahlia: Well, I know that now.

So when did things change for the better? How do you two interact together these days?

Dahlia: I think I learned to relax around Bianca a bit.

Bianca: Read—‘She stopped thinking that I was somehow going to blackmail her’. Someone isn’t overly used to the idea that other people in Melbourne might know a thing or two about supernatural creatures.

Dahlia: Look, it’s not every day you find out that the job you interviewed for is actually a front for a bunch of librarian witches!

Bianca: ‘Librarian witches’!?

Dahlia: Do you have a better way of describing the Sisterhood? You do research on the supernatural, figure out how we can better interact with them, teach people how to do magic. Librarian witches.

Bianca: Wow, you’ve got me there. Seems like ‘librarian witches’ it is. But, how we interact together these days, I think things got a bit better cause I bought her dinner that one time, then took her home afterwards. I have a pretty impressive… house.

Now that you both get along so much better, what’s the most important trait to you in a friend or romantic partner?

Dahlia: Honesty. Definitely honesty. If I can’t trust someone to tell me the truth, or to do their best to talk to me, I don’t think anything else is going to make up for that.

Bianca: Open-mindedness for me. I’m a bit quirky, and I need anyone I’m going to interact with regularly to be okay with that.

How would you both describe each other?

Bianca: Forceful.

Dahlia: Oh yeah? Too self composed.

Bianca: And forthright.

Dahlia: *laughs* Kind.

Bianca: Considerate of others. *beat* When she’s not fighting with them.

Dahlia: A good listener, when she’s not too busy being intimidating!

If you were in need of comforting, what would be the best thing that someone could do for you?

Bianca: Listen. Or maybe sit in silence with me, just keep me company when that was what I was after.

Dahlia: Hard same. Maybe with a book, or a DVD or something. And lots of hugs.

Where would you live, if you could live anywhere in the world?

Dahlia: Europe. Definitely somewhere in Europe.

Bianca: Yeah, well, I come from Ireland originally, so it would be nice to go back there and see how it’s changed in the last several years. But I’m quite happy with how things are over here in Melbourne right now.
