Somehow, every year when I go back to school, I manage to forget how expensive getting back to school is. There’s food to buy, books to buy, the inevitable forgotten thing, and then the things you didn’t realize you’d need. It adds up quite quickly, unfortunately. I also always forget how crazy busy you are the first week of school, and this week was no exception by a long shot.
The things I didn’t realize I needed list was much larger this year than it was last year, mostly because I’m in an apartment, and I have my own general space, which is new. There’s a lot of basic things that you forget you need when you’re setting up a kitchen for the first time.
I didn’t know that I wouldn’t have cell service in the apartment whatsoever, so that necessitated either switching phone companies or buying a microcell tower. The microcell tower was a larger first time purchase, but it was less expensive in the long run than switching to Verizon, so I got myself onto ebay and kept bidding on them until I finally won one for $120. Of course, that also basically drained my bank account, so I’ve been working off of roughly $30 for the last week and a half, but I get paid on Friday for the Western Carolinian, so it won’t kill me.
It’s been a good start to the semester, for the most part. I heard some horrible comments towards my history teacher simply due to the fact that she had an Obama sticker on her car, which disgusted me, and made me really happy that there’s enough people in the class that we aren’t doing group work.
I’d just like to remind my fellow students that your professors deserve your respect, especially when they keep their politics out of their classrooms. They have the same right to put bumper stickers on their car as you do. This does not mean you get to call them names such as ‘terrorist’ or ‘communist’ just because they vote differently than you do. Okay, I’ll hop off my soapbox now, but seriously, guys? Stop.
Other than that, I love all of my classes. I’m in two reporting classes, a publishing class, and Media Law. Media Law looks like it’s gonna be really tough, but it’s important for me to know, so I’m really excited for this semester.
The coolest thing I’ve done so far this semester has to be the Relient K concert that was held on campus on Thursday. I’ve loved Relient K for ages – I remember my siblings and I jamming to them on the way home from church in middle school, and they’re just as good live as they were when I listened to their albums ages ago. They’re a band that I would have paid good money to see, but I didn’t have to, thanks to the school. Much better choice than Sean Kingston, WCU! Keep up the good choices!
Another awesome thing that has happened in the last week is that my best friend’s sister had her baby, Brayden. He was a good month early, but we’re all really happy he’s here.
So far, he is healthy and enjoying all of the attention he’s getting from his family and friends. I wish he could have had the chance to meet his grandmother, Darla, and I wish she’d gotten to meet him, but I know she’s watching us all from heaven, and she has to be so proud of her daughters. I know I am. 🙂
I also know I can’t wait to meet this beautiful baby boy when I go home for fall break in October.
Oh! I almost forgot to tell you! I also began my fish rehoming service again here, and I have my first client. He was originally named Indy, but I decided to rename him King George. I’ll have photos of him up here tomorrow, if not earlier. If anyone in the WCU area wants a betta, I have a happy, healthy one that I’m willing to share!
All in all, it’s looking to be a great semester, and I can’t wait to share more stories and things with you guys. I’m trying to do a full text post at least once a week, with photo posts in between, but sometimes life gets in the way. Until next time, I hope you all have great days!
